This book is an attempt to chronicle the tremendous struggle that American workers waged in the 1930s at a time when we are ourselves confronted with great social and economic battles and an escalating level of class struggle. The American working class provides us with a lesson in courage, militancy and creativity in the face of huge obstacles.
Short of a revolutionary situation, no labour movement in an advanced country has fought for its rights with greater determination. American workers faced the richest and most powerful capitalist class in the world, a capitalist class with a history of ruthless and bloody repression. In the post First World War period and in the 1920s trade unions operated in what William Forbath has described as conditions of “semi-outlawry", the left was regularly subjected to “red scare” tactics and working class militancy was met with armed force.-------from the inside of this book ⓕ
